The Greyhound Writers Association was formed with a membership of 31 on 26 September, 1982.

Founder members: Harry Lloyd (chairman) and Bob Betts (secretary/treasurer).

The first meeting was held at the old GRA training establishment at Northaw, Potters Bar.

The area representatives were: John Gaisford (south west), Gary Newbon (midland) and John Forbes (north). Among that initial membership who have subsequently died were: Norton Jones, Alan Lennox, Harry Lloyd and Reg Potter.

The current membership is 24.

Bob Betts remains as the hon. sec., supported by a committee of Floyd Amphlett (Greyhound Star), Adrian Hunt (Daily Telegraph), Jonathan Kay (Racing Post) and Jim Austin (24dogs).

The GWA meets at least three times a year and its main duties are to: Cast votes for Greyhound of the Year, plus supporting categories: Top Sprinter; Standard Distance; Stayer and Marathon performer, as well as the Best British-Bred; Dam of Best British-Bred and Best (Greyhound) Newcomer and an award for services to greyhound racing.

The GWA took over the Greyhound of the Year award voting in 1983. It had previously been handled by the 'Silver Awards' panel, comprising a selected representation from greyhound breeders, owners, trainers and press.

The GWA committee also gathers to choose the best available middle distance contenders to meet in the annual Select Stakes (500 metres) one-off at Nottingham.
